Afe Babalola & Co. is a leading firm of election petition practitioners. Our election petition experience is decades-old and precedes the current Republic. In the 2nd Republic, we represented Prof. Ignatius Ayua of the National Republic Convention in Ayua v. Adasu (1992) 3 NWLR (Pt. 231) challenging the results of the 1991 gubernatorial election in Benue State. In the 4th Republic, Afe Babalola & Co. successfully defended former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in all the election petition matters instituted during his 8-year tenure and we have often and consistently represented Petitioners and Respondents in petitions arising from every general election cycle ever since. We represented former governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni in a series of petitions that bedevilled his period in office while in 2015, we were in Benue State again to represent Dr Terhemen Tarzoor, Gubernatorial Aspirant of the Peoples’ Democratic Party in the gubernatorial election petition in Benue State, reported as Tarzoor v. Ioraer `{`2016`}` 3 NWLR (Pt. 1500) 463. The Supreme Court would dismiss the appeal on grounds that the Appellant could not question happenings in another political party, although the Trial Tribunal’s finding of fact that the sequence of events narrated by the incumbent Respondent was factually incredible remained undisturbed. Managing Partner Adebayo Adenipekun has led several election petition cases and is well published, in books and articles, on the subject. He is the author of two editions of the book, Digest of Election Petition Cases. Partner Sina Ogungbade successfully obtained the dismissal of a petition arising from elections in Oyo State at the very early stages of the 2015 petitions season. It is on record that during the 2015 election petitions, that decision was the only decision of its kind to be upheld at the Court of Appeal across the nation.
